DEKA

Spartan’s fitness decathlon: 10 fixed work zones.

Indoor Indoor floor Timed 28 events in the catalogue

Overview

What it is

DEKA is Spartan’s functional fitness race format, built around 10 fixed equipment zones with weights scaled by gender. It runs as standalone events, gym-hosted affiliate events, and DEKA zones at Spartan race weekends.

Five formats vary the running component and intensity; the 10 core stations stay the same across STRONG, MILE, FIT and Ultra. DEKA ATLAS is a separate heavy format with entirely different zone exercises.

Format

How the race works

  • DEKA STRONG: 10 zones, no running (~20 min typical)
  • DEKA MILE: 10 zones + 1/4-mile run between each (~35 min typical)
  • DEKA FIT: 10 zones + 1/2-mile run between each (~55 min typical)
  • DEKA Ultra: 10 zones + 1-mile run between each (~90 min typical)
  • DEKA ATLAS: 10 heavy zones, 30-minute time cap — different exercises from standard DEKA

Rules

Rules worth knowing

  • Zones must be completed in order; each zone has a prescribed rep count or distance
  • Completing less than 80% of a zone’s work makes the finish unofficial
  • Weights are scaled by gender (M/F); no division-based weight differences
  • DEKA ATLAS has heavier implements and a strict 30-minute time cap
