Road running

Timed running races on closed roads or paths, 5K to marathon.

Outdoor Road Timed 316 events in the catalogue

Overview

What it is

Road races are the simplest format the app supports: a measured course, chip or gun timing, and pacing as the main variable. Your predicted finish time drives the fuelling plan, so set a realistic target.

Format

How the race works

  • Common distances: 5K, 10K, half marathon (21.1 km), marathon (42.2 km)
  • Chip timing gives you an accurate personal time regardless of when you cross the start

Rules

Rules worth knowing

  • Race numbers must be visible; many events ban headphones on open-road sections
  • Aid stations vary by event — shorter races may have one water point or none

Timings

Times and start waves

  • Start times are usually published at registration, with pens or waves by predicted pace

On the day

Logistics at the venue

  • Arrive about 60 minutes before your start
  • Aid stations are sparse — carry what you need
  • Carry your own fuel — no gels or food are provided on course
  • Bring: Photo ID · Registration/ticket
  • Worth packing: Tested road shoes · Safety pins / race belt for number · Warm layer for the start pen

Preparation

How CompeteCue helps

  • A timed countdown plan — eat, pack, buy, train, rest, travel — built around your event date and the forecast.
  • Fuelling routed by your predicted finish time, never by the event brand, with safety gates for declared medical conditions.
  • Packing lists that name your own kit and respect the rules above.
